Kmart Returns Australia: Refunds, Exchanges and Online Orders
Kmart Australia accepts eligible change-of-mind returns for Kmart products within 60 days of purchase, provided you can show adequate proof of purchase and the goods meet its resale-condition requirements. Eligible OnePass members have an extended period, but returns made after the standard period are handled differently. The return route also depends on who sold or fulfilled the item: a Kmart product, a Target product purchased through kmart.com.au and a Marketplace seller product are not interchangeable at the returns counter. Start with the retailer’s official returns overview and check the seller on your order confirmation before travelling to a store.
First identify who supplied your order
Your receipt or order confirmation is the most useful starting point. Kmart products bought in a Kmart store, from Kmart Online or in the Kmart app normally use Kmart’s own return process. Kmart says that eligible Kmart-fulfilled products purchased online must be returned to a Kmart store for a change-of-mind return; its standard change-of-mind postal return route is not available for these products. Bring your order confirmation email or tax invoice when you visit.
Products identified as Target items on kmart.com.au follow the Target returns route rather than the Kmart counter. A change-of-mind return for one of these orders can be taken to a Target store or initiated online through Kmart chat as appropriate. Marketplace items sold by a third-party seller must be returned online; Kmart stores cannot process them. If you bought a basket containing different sellers, separate the items by seller before starting a claim. The Kmart returns FAQ explains the different routes.
Kmart change-of-mind returns: timing and condition
Under Kmart’s change-of-mind policy, eligible Kmart products may be returned within 60 days of purchase. An active OnePass member may have up to 365 days for an eligible product, but must demonstrate the active subscription using the live account-status screen in the OnePass app. For qualifying returns made after 60 days, Kmart says it provides an exchange voucher rather than refunding the original payment method. Not every product benefits from the extension, so check the exclusions rather than assuming OnePass covers a seasonal purchase.
The item must be unused, unassembled and in a resaleable condition, with its original packaging, manuals and accessories. Clothing should be unworn with original ticketing. A receipt, digital receipt, online tax invoice or other adequate purchase evidence is required for this voluntary change-of-mind arrangement. If you merely prefer another colour or size, do not open, wash, assemble or use the product before checking whether you can return it. A faulty product should instead be considered under Kmart’s separate consumer-guarantee process.
What Kmart does not normally take back for change of mind
Kmart’s exclusions cover several types of goods where resale, hygiene or product characteristics matter. Its FAQ lists opened cosmetics, certain beauty products and fragrances, hosiery, underwear other than bras, swimwear, pierced jewellery, personalised printed products, food and drinks, gift cards, trading cards, mobile phones, live plants and certain opened goods such as bedding, tents, trampolines or furniture. Specific conditions may apply to items such as printer cartridges and other categories. The exact product condition and seller can change which rule applies; confirm the relevant details in the official FAQ before relying on a general list.
Clearance pricing alone is not the same as a blanket exclusion: Kmart’s FAQ says clearance items may be returned if they meet the applicable change-of-mind conditions. The practical distinction is between a resaleable discounted item and an item expressly excluded by product type or condition. None of these voluntary change-of-mind restrictions should be treated as a blanket answer to a claim that a product does not meet Australian consumer guarantees.
How to return a Kmart online order in person
Check your order confirmation and confirm Kmart fulfilled the item. Find an accessible Kmart store, take the complete item, and bring the purchase evidence shown in your account or email. If you paid using a card or mobile wallet, have the original payment method available because it may help the store process the refund. The item need not go back to the same Kmart location where you purchased it. For a large or unusual item, or if you live far from a store, ask Kmart support how to proceed before making a journey.
If the item is from Target or a Marketplace seller, stop at this point and use the seller-specific route. For third-party Marketplace products Kmart describes an online process in which you select the order item and reason using its chat or tracking route and the seller then confirms return details. The Marketplace returns policy says the seller generally responds within two business days and that change-of-mind return postage is paid by the customer. Do not post an item to a guessed address; follow the instructions issued for your particular order.
Exchanges, refunds and payment methods
An online purchase cannot simply be exchanged for a different size through Kmart’s online exchange service: Kmart’s FAQ says to return an eligible item and buy the replacement separately. For a purchase at a store, ask the returns team what can be arranged under the relevant conditions rather than assuming an identical process. If the replacement is urgently needed, check its stock and price before returning the original product; a new order may be a separate transaction.
For an eligible refund, Kmart ordinarily returns the money through the relevant original payment channel. Its FAQ explains that a gift-card purchase is refunded to a Kmart gift card and a split payment is returned proportionally across the payment methods used. Afterpay and PayPal refunds are directed to the corresponding account. Refunds through cards and other electronic methods can take up to five business days to appear once processed, depending on the financial institution. That is not a guaranteed period starting when you first ask for a return. Retain the receipt or email confirming the refund so support can trace a payment that has not appeared.
A faulty product is a separate question
A product that fails to meet applicable consumer guarantees is not simply a late change-of-mind return. Kmart’s consumer-guarantee returns policy covers issues such as a product being faulty, not matching its description or failing to do what the packaging says. The nature and seriousness of the issue affect whether a repair, replacement or refund is the appropriate remedy. In some cases Kmart may arrange assessment, and large white goods have a different support route; contact its chat service before attempting to transport an appliance.
For faulty Kmart-branded products such as Anko or OXX, Kmart states it may accept a qualifying consumer-guarantee return without proof of purchase and provide an exchange voucher. For non-Kmart brands, it asks for adequate evidence of purchase. This policy-specific option should not be confused with a universal entitlement to a voucher, nor does a missing receipt always mean a consumer has no legal rights. The ACCC guidance on proof of purchase sets out examples of alternative evidence. Australian consumer guarantees are distinct from the retailer’s voluntary return period; the ACCC guide to repairs, replacements and refunds explains the general distinction.
Practical examples: choosing the right return route
A jacket is the wrong size. Imagine you ordered a Kmart-fulfilled jacket online, tried it on carefully, kept the tags attached and still have the confirmation email. Check the 60-day change-of-mind window and take it to a Kmart store with its packaging. If you would prefer another size, check stock first: Kmart says online orders are returned and repurchased rather than exchanged directly.
No paper receipt for a defective Anko appliance. You have an Anko item that appears faulty, but the receipt is missing. Do not treat it as an ordinary change-of-mind return. Read Kmart’s Kmart-branded consumer-guarantee rule, gather any order or transaction details you can find and ask for assessment. The exchange-voucher arrangement for qualifying products without proof is Kmart’s stated policy, not a promise of a particular outcome for every fault.
A Marketplace chair arrived damaged. The order says a third-party seller supplied the chair. Photograph the issue, retain the seller details and use Kmart’s online Marketplace route. Taking it to a Kmart counter will not start the correct process. If the chair is large, ask about the safe collection or return method before paying transport charges or packaging it.
Official Kmart help and useful records
Use Kmart’s official contact page for its live chat and published telephone support. The company lists 1800 124 125 for online shopping, store and product enquiries; support hours are stated on that page and may change. Give the support team the order number, seller name, return reason and any reference number from an earlier conversation. For a payment follow-up, have the return receipt or refund email ready. Never send full card details or sensitive identity documents to an unverified contact channel.
This is an independent explanation of Kmart’s Australian returns pathways, not a Kmart-operated service. Policy exclusions, payment methods and fulfilment arrangements can change. Check the linked official pages for the terms applicable to your purchase, particularly if the product was supplied by Target or a Marketplace seller.
Can I return a Kmart online order by post?
For a Kmart-fulfilled change-of-mind order, Kmart directs customers to return the item to a Kmart store. Target and Marketplace products sold on kmart.com.au have separate return routes, including an online pathway. Check the supplier shown on the order confirmation.
Will Kmart refund a change-of-mind return after the standard window?
An eligible OnePass return made after 60 days is handled under Kmart’s extended terms and may receive an exchange voucher instead of a refund to the original payment method. You must meet the eligibility and product-exclusion rules.
Does a lost receipt prevent a faulty-product claim?
Not necessarily. Kmart states a special exchange-voucher arrangement for qualifying faulty Kmart-branded goods without proof of purchase. For other goods, gather alternative evidence such as an online invoice or transaction record and ask the retailer what will reasonably demonstrate the purchase.
